Study: Mobile Devices Snag 60% of All Video Views Worldwide

Details
15 March 2018

Mobile devices were responsible for 60% of all video views worldwide in Q4 2017 as audiences were more likely to watch programming on a smartphone or tablet than a PC or TV, according to a study by video technology company Ooyala. As more premium sports programming moves online and can be viewed on mobile, this number may top 70% soon.

Smartphones (55%) topped PCs (36%) in Q4 for the percentage of pre-roll ad impressions shown on broadcaster platforms that distribute TV content online. Smartphone pre-roll impressions were highest on publisher platforms at 69%, which Ooyala defines as including news and media organizations. Broadcasters saw mid-roll impressions on smartphones rise to 28% in Q4 from 16% in Q3, while publishers experienced a jump to 51% from 44% for the same periods.

Measuring the Reach of "Fake News" and Online Disinformation in Europe

Details
01 February 2018

In this factsheet by Richard Fletcher, Alessio Cornia, Lucas Graves and Rasmus Kleis Nielsen, we provide top-level usage statistics for the most popular sites that independent fact-checkers and other observers have identified as publishers of false news and online disinformation. We focus on two European countries: France and Italy. We examine France and Italy as two particularly important cases, as both are widely seen as facing serious issues with for-profit and ideologically/politically motivated online disinformation.

We find that:

None of the false news websites we considered had an average monthly reach of over 3.5% in 2017, with most reaching less than 1% of the online population in both France and Italy. By comparison, the most popular news websites in France (Le Figaro) and Italy (La Repubblica) had an average monthly reach of 22.3% and 50.9%, respectively;...

IAB Europe Study: AdEx Benchmark H1 2017 – Online Advertising Continues Double-Digit Growth

Details
23 November 2017

The AdEx Benchmark H1 2017 Study published by IAB Europe in collaboration with IHS Markit, reveals that online advertising grew 11.5% to €22.2bn for the first half of 2017 from €20.2bn in H1 2016.

Online video grew 3.2x faster than non-video display reaching €1.7bn in H1 2017 which accounts for 20% of total display spend suggesting that digital is becoming a key channel for brand advertising campaigns. 5 Billion People Now Have a Mobile Phone Connection, According to GSMA Data

Details
13 June 2017

Planet Earth has hit a notable technological milestone, with five billion people globally — or two-thirds of the world’s population — now laying claim to a mobile phone connection.

The announcement came from GSMA Intelligence, the research arm of the trade body that represents the interests of mobile networks around the world.

The GSMA displays a real-time tracker for total connections and unique subscribers globally and, as you can see below, there are now a fraction more than 5 billion individual mobile users around the world. GSMA calculates the figure using an “extensive database of mobile statistics and forecasts” that are updated each day.

More European Newspapers are Charging for Content Online (but there are differences by country)

Details
17 May 2017

The factsheet looks at the different kinds of paid content (freemium, metered paywalls, hard paywalls) across 171 different news organizations in the U.K., France, Germany, Italy, Finland, and Poland.

Among the findings:

— Across the countries, 66 percent of the newspapers and 71 percent of weekly newspapers and news magazines had some kind of pay model. Freemium models were most common, followed by metered paywalls. Of digital-native sites, 97 percent offered their content for free; the only one in Reuters’ study that didn’t was France’s MediaPart (there’s also De Correspondent in The Netherlands, El Diario in Spain, and Zetland in Denmark, but this report didn’t look at those countries).
