Apple's iPad boosts FT online subscriptions

Digital Media Statistics

Financial Times Chief Executive John Ridding said that Apple Inc's iPad and other mobile devices are driving 20 percent of the newspaper's new online subscriptions.

Ridding, who was speaking at an investor conference in New York on Thursday, said, "The rapid emergence of tablet devices is a potentially profound development for publishers." The FT's iPad app had been downloaded 480,000 times, up from 430,000 downloads at the end of November.

Its quarterly report, which analysed a sample of US-based and global Brightcove customers for Q3 2010, found that newspaper sites streamed 313m minutes of video in the quarter, compared with 290m minutes uploaded by broadcasters.

IDC: iPad, Kindle Still Rule Tablets, E-Readers

Digital Media Statistics

In a new quarterly report tracking the burgeoning tablet and e-reader markets, technology research firm IDC said tablet shipments grew 45% in the third quarter to 4.8 million worldwide. The iPad continues to own the segment, accounting for a full 90% of tablets shipped.

With the arrival of the Galaxy Tab and host of competing devices coming this year from Motorola, Research in Motion and other manufacturers, though, Apple's market share is likely to contract in 2011.

IDC projects tablet shipments worldwide to nearly triple to 44.6 million this year from 17 million in 2010, and to hit 70.8 million in 2012. Growth in 2011 and beyond will be driven by vendors launching media tablets based on Android and other operating systems, as well as price and feature competition, and strong demand from both consumers and business users.

iPad Owners Prefer Ad-Supported Content To Paid

Digital Media Statistics

A large majority of iPad owners would prefer free, ad-supported media to content they have to pay for, according to a new survey by Knowledge Networks, first reported on the Ad Age Web site. But by the same token, they're not exactly happy about advertising.

Specifically, Knowledge Networks found that 86% of iPad owners would be willing to see an ad in return for free access to content, including TV shows and articles from magazines and newspapers. That compares with just 13% who said they would be willing to pay for this type of content, if they already have access to it elsewhere.

At the same time, 78% said advertising "takes away from their enjoyment of their iPad." Assuming this group includes all 13% who said they prefer paid content, this would seem to suggest that about 65% of iPad owners would grudgingly accept advertising -- even though they don't actually like it -- rather than reach for their wallets.
