Forecast: Ad Sales Looking Good, Especially for Mobile and Social Media

Digital Media Statistics

Spending on ads globally will grow 3.5% this year, to $447.5 billion, according to the latest quarterly forecast from ZenithOptimedia. That's up from the research firm's prediction in April of a 2.2% increase this year -- and it's the third consecutive upgrade after six downgrades.

The soothsayers are particularly impressed with recent signs of strength in North America, for example, in ad sales for the TV season that begins in September. A few months ago, ZenithOptimedia expected advertisers to spend 1.5% less on all major media in the U.S. and Canada in 2010 than they did in 2009. Now the firm projects a 1.3% increase.

YouTube Surpasses Two Billion Video Views Daily

Digital Media Statistics

Less than a month after its 5th birthday, YouTube has announced that it has exceeded 2 billion video views per day.

The announcement from the Google-owned video website comes as part of a larger initiative that the company is launching today to retell the history behind YouTube and its growth. Part of that campaign is the launch of “My YouTube Story” and the related YouTube 5 Year Channel.

The new YouTube 5 Year Channel is the landing page for the campaign. With it, YouTube intends to get users to submit videos about the impact YouTube has had on their lives. It will eventually be curated by Stephen Higgins, a documentary filmmaker. There is also an interactive timeline depicting the social media’s history and a collection of videos from celebrities discussing the five year achievement.

Is Twitter Your New Video Engagement Tool?

Digital Media Statistics

A curious bit of data emerged from yesterday's study of Q1 2010 video metrics from Brightcove and TubeMogul. Twitter referrals to videos on every major category of destination resulted in longer viewing times than any other traffic source. A Twitter referral to a music video averaged a 2:33 viewing time compared to 2:01 of time spent by people coming from Google. Tweets drove viewing sessions of 1:52 on broadcast locations, but traffic coming from Facebook, Bing and Google were all in the 1:37 to 1:38 range. The exception to this rule was Tweets landing on newspaper sites, where Yahoo customers viewed one second longer than Twitter refers.

Which is not to say that Twitter is the biggest source of traffic. It is simply the source that seems to bear the most engaged viewer ...

Digital Media Statistics

While ad networks and other collective buying channels continue to attract media buyers, the majority still prefer buying by the site, according to a new report from research firm Advertiser Perceptions, which was commissioned by ad network and technology provider Collective Media.

A full 52% of respondents indicated they would increase spending on content sites -- such as ESPN and WebMD -- this year.

What's more, nearly half -- 46% -- of respondents reported a site-centric focus, with spending increases limited to vertical content and video sites.

Overall, 34% of respondents indicated that they would increase online ad spending in 2010, with 35% of respondents indicating they would increase spending on ad networks....
